Stephen Zimmerman
Chairman, NewSmith Asset Management
Stephen Zimmerman has over 30 years' experience in the investment management industry. Prior to
founding NewSmith, Stephen was Joint Chief Operating Officer of Merrill Lynch Investment Managers,
the asset management arm of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. Stephen was also a Senior Vice President of
Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc., and a member of the firm's Executive Management Committee from 1998 to 2001.
He joined SG Warburg in 1971, where he specialised in fund management for over 20 years, building
and then leading one of the foremost investment management businesses in the UK. He was Deputy
Chairman of Mercury Asset Management Group plc, the UK's largest fund manager with £100 billion
under management, and a FTSE-100 company.
Stephen joined Merrill Lynch upon the firm's £3.1 billion acquisition of MAM in 1997, a deal that
Stephen was instrumental in bringing about and which was over twice as large as any other acquisition
in the money management business at the time.
In May 2006 Stephen Zimmerman was appointed Chairman of Jewish Care.
From June 2001 to December 2003 Stephen was Chairman of the Royal Marsden Hospital Cancer
Campaign. Stephen was educated at Clifton College, Bristol and graduated from City of London
College with a BA Hons in Business Studies.
