Paul Roy
Founding Partner
Prior to co-founding NewSmith in 2003, Paul Roy was President of Global Markets
and Investment Banking at Merrill Lynch. He was an Executive Vice President of Merrill
Lynch & Co., Inc. and a member of the firm’s Executive Management Committee. Previously,
he was Head of Merrill's Global Equity Markets division from 1998 to 2001, responsible
for trading, underwriting and sales of all equity and equity-linked securities worldwide,
and Head of European Equity Markets from 1995 to 1998.
Paul joined Merrill Lynch in 1995 when it acquired Smith New Court, where he was
Chief Executive Officer. He joined Smith New Court in 1988. Over the period leading
to its acquisition by Merrill Lynch, the business grew from a £50 million company
into one of the leading market making and brokerage firms on the London Stock Exchange,
valued at over £500 million. From 1974 to 1987, he served as Senior Partner in two
leading London-based brokerage firms: Kemp Gee and Co. and Citicorp Scrimgeour Vickers.
He began his career in the City of London at the stockbroker Morton & Co. in 1968.
Paul is Chairman of the property investment company, New River Retail plc, and is
a non-executive Director of Cenkos Securities plc. He is also Chairman of the British
Horseracing Authority and a member of the Horseracing Betting Levy Board.
He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics (honours) from the University of Liverpool.
