Paul Roy

Founding Partner

Paul Roy has over 30 years' experience in the banking and securities industry. Prior to founding NewSmith, he was Co-President of the Global Markets and Investment Banking division ("GMI") at Merrill Lynch, with responsibility for the firm's worldwide Investment Banking, Debt and Equity Markets businesses. Paul was an Executive Vice President of Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. and a member of the Executive Management Committee.

Prior to running GMI Paul was head of Merrill's Global Equity Markets division from 1998 to 2001, responsible for trading, underwriting and sales of all equity and equity-linked securities worldwide. Before that he was head of European Equity Markets from 1995 to 1998.

Paul joined Merrill Lynch in 1995 when it acquired Smith New Court, where he was Chief Executive Officer. He joined Smith New Court in 1988 and worked closely with Michael Marks in building the business from a £50 million company into one of the leading market making brokerage firms on the London Stock Exchange, valued at over £500 million when sold to Merrill Lynch in 1995.

Prior to Smith New Court, from 1974 to 1987, he was a Senior Partner in the leading London-based brokerage firms of Kemp Gee and Co. and Citicorp Scrimgeour Vickers.

Paul is a non-executive Director of Benfield Group plc and of Cenkos Securities plc. He is Chairman of the British Horseracing Authority.

He has a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics (honours) from Liverpool University, England.
